We have had a wonderful 10 days in kindergarten! I am looking forward to seeing all of you at Kindergarten Orientation Tuesday, August 24th at 6:30.

First Day of School Arrival

Dear Parents,

The first day of kindergarten is such an exciting day! I am looking forward to a great day and I’m sure your child is as well. It is important for us to work together in order to make this day a success.

There are many classroom routines that will help your child have a great year in kindergarten. It is my request that you allow us to begin establishing our schedule beginning the first day of school. Once children know the classroom routines, our day will run very smoothly.

Therefore, I ask that if you bring your child to school, please do not come into the classroom or unpack for them. It is my belief that your child will be most successful if he or she takes responsibility for his or her morning routines beginning Monday. Please trust me and allow us to establish these classroom routines from the first day of school. Your child will be learning so many new things the first day of kindergarten including how to unpack, where to put certain supplies each morning, how to move his or her attendance clip, how to make a lunch choice, and what to do until we begin our Morning Meeting. Your child will be able to do these things independently in a matter of days, but I need your cooperation. Please take as many first day of school pictures as you would like as your child enters the building, but please allow us to build a sense of community Monday by allowing your child to independently enter the classroom. There will be many times throughout the year when parents are invited to our classroom, but please allow your child to take care of his or her morning routines independently.

I know your child will have so much to share with you when he or she gets home from school. I am anticipating a fun day of learning Monday!

Our day will begin promptly at 8:00am, so it is best if your child arrives by 7:50am each day.

Remember that the summer is a great time to read lots of great books with your mom and dad! Take time to visit the library and bookstore. Read fiction and nonfiction books and talk to your mom or dad about the main idea, setting, and characters.

Poetry and Punch

Friday we celebrated the conclusion of our poetry unit with a party called Poetry and Punch! Although the unit is officially "over" now that the students have the skills to write poetry, they can continue this style of writing as often as they would like!

I am proud of all 21 poets!!

And...what's a party without a little Miley Cyrus and Michael Jackson music. We may or may not have had a little dance party too.

Grandparents are Great!

We painted the oceans on our globes today and the kids had a lot of fun!! Tomorrow we will add the continents!

Technology Lab

Today we took our first trip to the Technology Lab at the primary campus. It was a BIG hit with the students!! The students practiced typing "password" to log into the computers. The students then navigated from the Sarah Smith home page to Mrs. Frank's technology page. Once the students were there, they practiced learning the home row on the keyboard using the game http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/typing/

I think the class is doing a great job adjusting to our new surroundings at the Primary Campus. We are working hard and learning a lot. I want all of the students to have a successful 2010...that means a great end to kindergarten and a great start to first grade!!

The kids are doing a great job reading lots of books for the Read-a-Thon! Renee McKown came today to count the number of book credits we have as a class. So far, we have read 150 books!! The kids were able to add 15 apples to our Read-a-Thon apple tree!

Author's Celebration and American Flag Treats

Our author's celebration was a huge success! The children loved sharing their stories with the class. We toasted each other at the end of the celebration and congratulated one another on great writing! The students enjoyed the "fancy drink" otherwise known as apple juice.

We had a fun Friday celebrating Johnny Appleseed's birthday! Our homemade applesauce was delicious and the kids really enjoyed making it!

At the end of the day we had a very special guest reader. Hank was in my class last year and asked if he could come read. He did a FABULOUS job reading a book about stingrays to the class! Way to go Hank!!

Thanks Martin Family for the yummy snacks. The kids loved making their names with the letter cookies!

We had a lot of fun during science today. All of the little scientists used all of their senses except taste to predict the flavor of jello. Little did they know, it was strawberry jello that I had dyed purple with food coloring. Most students predicted that the jello was grape because of the purple color. Once the scientists ate the jello, they discovered it was strawberry. This activity taught us that all of our senses work together. We experience much of what we eat with the smell and sight of the food, before we have even eaten it.

It was a fun day of learning!

Remember that our class party is Thursday, August 27 from 2:45-4:15 at the Kennedy's.

The address is 4255 Glengary Court, 30342.

Since this is a pool party, each child needs to have an adult at the party. If you cannot attend with your child, please make plans for another adult to attend and supervise your child.

If your child's afternoon transportation will change on the day of the party, please send a note to school Thursday in your child's red folder.

I know the kiddos are looking forward to the party!

The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn

We will be reading The Kissing Hand the first day of school. It is a story about Chester Raccoon. Chester is nervous about the first day of school and wants to stay home with his mother. His mother tells him the secret of the kissing hand. She kisses his palm and when he misses her during school, all he has to do is press his hand and remember his mother's love.

I have been making kissing hand cookies and I hope the children enjoy eating them after listening to the sweet story.

Mr. Gresham helped too!

What can you make with pool noodles?

I find myself getting excited for the start of a new school year. The aisles of all the stores are stocked with school supplies and the time has come to prepare for a new group of kiddos. I always have fun thinking of ideas for my August bulletin board. This year I decided to try something new. I am attempting to make "Smarties" candies using pool noodles and clear cellophane. It's a fun Sunday afternoon craft, but I'm not sure if it is actually going to work as planned.

How Can I Help My Child Prepare for Kindergarten?

-Read to your child everyday!

-Talk to your child about the title of the book, the author, and the illustrator.

-After reading, allow your child to draw a picture of his or her favorite part.

-Practice counting!

-Encourage independence in your child. Allow your child to have simple chores such as dusting furniture with a sock, making his or her own bed, putting toys away, taking dinner plate to the sink, etc.

-Foster curiosity and wonder in your child so that he or she will come to school ready to explore and learn!
